“The “Diary of Fishing” by William Wraith and Friends. From October, 1893.

Wraith family

The “Diary of Fishing” by William Wraith and Friends. From October, 1893. (William was born in 1877 he first started fishing in 1888. He died in 1957).

The transcript of this “first diary” has been done by Mike Adams of the Friends of Ossett Library by kind permission of the Wraith family. It is used as base material in a story by Mike about the 5 generations of the Wraith family of anglers from Ossett and Wakefield who fished locally and occasionally further afield. The story is to be published under the University of Leeds “Yarn” project as part of the “Weaving Ossett’s History” strand. Mike would be delighted to receive any comments or further information on the subject. Email ossettarchive@gmail.com.

Walter Wraith wrote a history of Wakefield Angling Club’s History. Early in the Club’s history it was renamed Wakefield Tradesmen’s Angling Club then later reverted back to its original name. This History of Wakefield Tradesman’s Angling Club is a separate published story on this site. It gives details of many of the venues mentioned in these diaries.

Early in the first diary there is a section headed:-

30th March 1901 –“Addresses of Firms at Ossett where fishing can be obtained –

Sam Firth, Pale Side Mill, Flushdyke (earlier entry had name as Joshua Swallow).

John Speight and Sons, Northfield Mill, Ossett.

Fernside Glover, Westfield Mill, Ossett.

The Highfield Mill Co., Ossett

Joshua Ward, Bottomfield Mill, Ossett (this entry crossed out)

J. Phillips and Son, Ossett

Henry Bickle, Ossett.

Early in the diary it says:-

“I first fished Holdsworths Pond in 1891 when I caught with maggots 11 splendid roach and 5 tench which together must have weighed over 3 lbs”. (Holdsworth’s Dam was on Walton Lane, Sandal).

The diary also contains a daily list of eggs laid by William’s hens (this may have been the original use of the book).

“G” referred to as an angler in the notes below was George, William’s brother (see top photo). They occasionally fished with their father and uncle David. I think “Uncle David” must have been David Oliver, William’s mother’s brother. On the 1881 census William was living with his aunt and uncle

Census 1881

The diary contained the two newspaper cuttings below:-

Cutting from Boston Guardian 23 Jul 1898 re fish caught by William & George. Notice the hook attached to the cutting. This is the one he caught the 5lbs bream on (recorded as being a little smaller in his diary).

Cutting 1898

Cutting (possibly from Boston Guardian) July, 1901 re fish caught by William.

Cutting July 1901

Early in the diary a common bait used by William and his friends is described as “Kings”. I have researched this and found that it was a proprietary paste powder sold in 2d, 3d & 6d packets. It could also be used to feed aquarium fish. I think that the product was made near Yedingham in North Yorkshire. Photo of a packet

Kings 1

“Kill Devil” lure often used by William.

To try and help readers identify various aspects of the diary I have colour-coded the text in some places as follows:-

Key events – Text colour

Stocking of waters.

Interesting comments.

Transport and “lodgings”.

Accidents!

Matches.

Army Service.

In the diary “W” is for William, the author and “G” is for his brother George.
